Diabetes Treatment Options and Prevention? Diabetes is a disease where the body is unable to efficiently utilize sugar, otherwise known as glucose, in the blood. There are three major types of diabetes. Although the basics of the diabetes disease are the same, the type can cause the symptoms to vary slightly. Type one diabetes was formerly known as juvenile diabetes. Type two diabetes occurs primarily in adults. Gestational diabetes can be found only in pregnant women. Gestational diabetes tends to show up anywhere between weeks six and sixteen. In the majority of cases, as soon as the baby is delivered, the diabetes is gone. Most people who suffer with diabetes of any type are otherwise generally healthy individuals. There are symptoms of diabetes that are common. Frequent urination, increased thirst, or increased hunger can all be a sign of diabetes. Weight loss can be an indicator of the disease as well. It is possible that all signs of diabetes may be present, only one may be, or a combination of any number of symptoms. With both incidences of obesity on the rise and the amount of fatty or sugary foods readily available, the number of diabetes cases in the United States has risen sharply over the last couple decades. With many cases, diabetes can be controlled by a healthy diet, low in carbohydrates and sugars. While all diabetes sufferers must test their blood sugar multiple times a day, not all individuals have to inject insulin shots. In the last couple years, a pill has been produced to take the place of insulin injections. This pill is just as effective as the traditional shot. However, the pill is sulfa based; anyone who is allergic to sulfa based medicine would have to still take the traditional injection. It is important for both individuals with diabetes and those that do not have the disease to maintain a healthy diet with exercise. As of this point, there is no cure for diabetes; there are only maintenance options.
