Separate QR image problems from destination problems, then test contrast, print size, borders and the page behind the code.
“The QR code does not work” can mean two different things: the phone cannot recognize the pattern, or it recognizes the code but the destination fails. Identifying which problem you have prevents unnecessary redesigns.
First check whether the code can be read
Try the original downloaded image on a clear screen, then the printed version. If the original works but the print does not, investigate print quality, size, surface and placement.
- Keep the empty border around the pattern clear.
- Use strong contrast and avoid patterns behind the code.
- Do not stretch the square into a rectangle.
- Check whether a fold, curve, glare or sticker seam obscures it.
- Try a simpler design if a large logo or decoration interferes.
The QR code reader can help inspect an image's encoded content. A successful image decode does not replace testing the physical print with a phone.
If it scans, inspect the destination
Read the displayed address before opening it. For your own code, compare it with the intended URL. Then test the address directly. Look for a deleted page, expired short link, sign-in requirement or typo.
If the printed code points to a managed redirect you control, fixing its destination may restore the journey. If it directly encodes an address you cannot maintain, you may need a new print. The printed pattern itself cannot be edited remotely.
Retest under real conditions
Print the corrected design at final size. Test the likely viewing distance and lighting with more than one phone. A code on glossy packaging behaves differently from a large preview on a monitor.
Include a readable URL as a fallback and label the expected action. Someone should know why to scan before lifting their phone.
